The Study of Life

Biology: is the study of living and once-living things.

Light microscope: light passes through the object being looked at and then through two or more lenses.

Stereomicroscope: is used fo viewing large objects and things through which light cannot pass, such as insect.

International System of Units: is a measuring system based on units of 10.

Meter: the SI unit of length.

Volume: is the amount of space a substance occupies.

Kilogram: the SIunit of mass.

Celsius: scientific measure of temperature.

Scientific method: the steps to solve problems.

Hypothesis: is the stament that can be tested.

Experiment: testing a hypothesis using a series of steps with controlled conditions.

Variable: is something that causes the changes observed in a experiment.

Contol: is a standard for comparing results.

Data: are the recorded facts from measurements of experiment.

Theory: is the hypothesis that has beeb tested again and again by many scientist with similar results each time.

Thechnology: the use of scientific discoveeries to solve everyday problems.

Potist and Fungi

Protozoan: are one-celled animal-like organism with nucleus.

Cilia: are short hairlike parts on the surface of the cell.

Sporozoans: are protozoans that reproduce by forming spores.

Spores: are special cells that develop into new organism.

Algae: are plantlike protists.

Multicellular: means that an organism has many different cells that do certain jobs for the organism.

Slime molds: are funguslike protists that are consumers.

Hyphae: the bodiesnof mostnfungi are made of network of threadlike stucture.

Sporagium fungi: are fungi that produce spores in sporagnia.

Sporangia: are stuctures, found on the tips of hyphae, that make spores.

Club fungi: fungi with club-shaped parts that produce spores.

Sac fungi: produce spores in saclike stuctures.

Budding: is reproduction in which small part of the parent grows into a new organism.

Mutualism: a living arrangement in which both organism benefit.

Lichen: is a fungus and an organism with chlorophyll that live together.

Virus and Monerans

  1. Virus: ia made of chromosonmes-like partsurrounded by protein coat.
  2. Host: is an organism that`provides food for a parasite.
  3. Parasite: is an organism that lives in or on another living things and get food from it.
  4. Interferon: is a chemical substance that interfers with the way viruses reproduce
  5. Vaccines: are substance made from weakened or dead viruses
  6. Bacteria: are very small, one celled monerans.
  7. Clony: is a group similar cell growing next to each other that do not depend on each other.
  8. Capsule: some bacteria have a sticky outer layer.
  9. Flagellum: some bacteria move with long, whiplike thread.
  10. Fission: is the process of one organism diving into two organism.
  11. Asexul reproduction: is the reproduvtion of a living thng from only one parent.
  12. Endospore: is a thick-walked sturcutre that forms inside the cell, enclosing all nuclear material and some cyotplasm.
  13. Saprophytes: areorganism that use deadmaterials for food.
  14. Descomposers: are living things that get their food from breaking  down dead matter into simple chemical.
  15. Koch `s postulates: are steps for proving that diases is caused by a certain microscopic organism.
  16. Communicable diases.are ones that can be passed from one organism to another.
  17. Antibiotics: are chemical substance that killor slow the growth of bacteria.
  18. Biotechnology: is the use of ling things to solve practical problems.
  19. Pasteurization: the process to heating milkto kill harmful bacteria.
  20. Blue- green bacteria. are small, one-celled monerans that contain chlorophyll and can make their own food.
